History: Footy first got its start when the forerunner to AFL Tonga was founded on Australia Day (Jan 26) 2003 by Australian expatriates Tim Valente and Mark Korsten. AusAID AYAD placements helped maintain momentum and in 2008 a senior side attended the International Cup, though a mix-up meant they entered too late for the main draw, instead playing in the multi-cultural section. Junior development has continued and the Tongan Under 16s took out the inaugural Oceania Cup in 2009.
Outlook (2009): With young talent coming through and the AFL focussing on the South Pacific the future is bright provided reliable support networks can be maintained in Tonga.
Other points of interest: On 20th August 2008 two Tongan players were tragically crippled for life by a car accident while preparing for the 2008 International Cup. Paumolevuka Tu'i (18) of Talafo'ou and Mafua Kiokata (22) of Nukunuku need ongoing support which AFL Tonga is attempting to assist with, and any help is always greatly appreciated, with donations welcomed by the Pau Mafua Trust Fund.
