After there were only a handful of countries boasting actual leagues through to the end of the 20th century, the early 21st century saw many new nations growing the game. The dominant nations remain Great Britain, Ireland and Denmark but many others are improving quickly. This lead to the 2010 formation of the European Australian Football Association (EAFA), with almost all European countries with Australian football leagues immediately joining.

After the 2010 Euro Cup, the committee of the EAFA voted unanimously to rename itself AFL Europe.
