Actually I thought the most startling comment Gillon made was:

"If you can find an oval for us with a capacity around 20,000 in Auckland and we'll do it". "What you'll base a team there?" "Yeah".

He then made a bit of light of timelines but it I still thought it was very interesting. It was a bit of a tease really - almost like we definitely will if we can get an oval but we won't be any time soon because we can't.

Given that international growth over the last 10+ years has been positive but not explosive I've come to firmly believe that getting an AFL team in NZ is the only likely way to accelerate things rapidly.

I can't see it being anything other than a long, slow process in NZ. But it looks like St Kilda want to play a NAB Challenge match in Auckland next year so they're still working at it.
