NPC in Wellington To Crown NZ's Best Province

The tournament had some very good football according to reports provided personally to me and on AFLNZ.co.nz. Full match reports and award winners are available there.

Canterbury were undefeated being re-crowned as premier province having been very strong over recent seasons but dropping the title to the Aucklanders in 2013. Auckland were again good coming away with two wins. Wellington were very competitive against both Canterbury and Auckland with only a 3 goal losing average against them meanwhile accounting for Otago easily.

Pleasingly Otago were able to attend again which shows a core is developing in the far south but they are in need of some form of regular local competition.

The loss of Waikato at this level is disappointing but can be traced to the loss on NZ legend Jim Lucy whose focus has been elsewhere in recent seasons. The return to WA of both Jim and Jenny will be a huge loss to NZ footy.

Though the talent ID aspects and junior development aspects of the AFLNZ programs are going from strength to strength it is not having such a noticeable effect at this level. I am sure all involved hope that greater depth in terms of teams develops at this level reflective of local programs.
