I know that Starling was signed under the International Scholarship Scheme (I know the difference between an International Scholarship holder and an International Rookie). That was this year - 2012. However, Sydney made it clear when he was signed onto the scholarship that he would be upgraded to the rookie list in 2013 (the same as Gideon Simon). I don't thik this has happened. Does anybody know?

I wasn't aware of they'd made that commitment.  We can try to find out.

The Starling story I think first broke back in Jan, and by August there were media reports indicating that if all things went well then he'd be rookie listed in 2013.

On Redandwhiteonline the sentiment is that the Swans have 3 Cat A rookies and 4 Cat B with no room for Starling.  Who knows.  They have an Alex Starling thread with nothing consequential at present.

ActuallyI  just found out two days ago that Sydney have let Starling go and are not signing him as an International Rookie due to injury and fitness concerns - suppose he just hasn't come on as they would have expected. A shame. With expansion I was certain that more Internationals and Northern Territorians would be drafted/rookie listed. This is not the case. Despite the success of players like Mike Pyke, Pearce Hanley & Cyril Rioli, there are less Internationals and Territorians on AFL lists than 3 years ago. Hopefully North Melbourne sign Eric Wallace - International Rookie list cut off is this Friday.

Probably not surprising re Starling unless he showed something special.  With the established Mumford then Pyke doing well and Sam Reid already a very good tall forward at 20 years old and Sydney picking up Irishman Tommy Walsh last year they were already looking good in the big man department.  Now securing Kurt Tippett who plays forward and ruck it's hard to see Pyke getting a game (unless Mumford gets injured) let alone Walsh.  So speculating on tall internationals probably isn't worth their effort for the next few years.
