We started to follow Emile's work back in 2008:  Teaching footy to the kids in Canada

It goes to show these things take time and need a year after year commitment to slowly build them up, explore opportunities, bring in partners etc.

It's interesting to ponder where this could lead purely from a footy point of view.  Getting so many kids exposed to the game must help the OAFL with future recruitment.  To really make a big difference though either the program would have to get huge (hopefully it will) or there needs to be ongoing games at club or school level for some of the kids to feed into.

Hopefully somehow AFL Canada / the OAFL can make that connection to fully benefit from the groundwork.  I've always seen so many similarities between Canada and Australia and see real potential for footy to become a reasonably popular amateur sport there.

Canadians don't just share a similar population concentrated along the Southern extremities of a harsh land but what is simplest to sum up as a Commonwealth upbringing. They even have a East/West divide that extends to sports. In general terms the Canadian passion is ice hockey so acceptance of AFL is not a problem and IMO I see great potential. The question is quality Vs quantity. On the West coast we have the CDJAFL which has produced a senior team after junior teams progressed . In places where juniors have taken up AFL the problem has always been in providing the link. In Sydney it took a while for the high profile Sydney Swans to increase participation rates and then took another period to provide a pathway to senior clubs. If it was only a question of pathways then it'd be a nice problem to have.
