Chris, I think your point is right. If the respective countries leagues are the ones working to create opportunities with Aussie clubs, it is imperative that those gaining clubs commit back to those coutnries that they will permit and in fact encourage, those players to participate in the Cup.

Another factor is not just the club, but the mates created at the club who might have words for a team mate leaving during the finals.

In 2005 the US had at least one player that wasnt able to particpate with us after being in Oz and that likely impacted the decision of another, both potential starters.

The AFL should assist in future IC's by strongly encouraging all leagues to make sure players can play for their country.  Afterall, the number is small and they are spread out over many leagues, so it should not hurt the leagues involved at all.
