GWS announce International Scholarships

Why is Ireland excluded from being offered scholarships? Didn't they have a player on the World XVIII last year, Sean O Kennedy, and another this year, Muiris Bartley? Both of whom did/are doing very well by all accounts. Surely they deserved to be recognised, or am I missing something?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think at one point there was an agreement between the GAA and AFL, as the GAA were wary of too many young Gaelic footballers and hurlers getting scouted young and the AFL didn't want to jeopardise the international rules series.

Someone else reading this would probably know better though.

That was my understanding, special case for Ireland, a case of real politik, they had to keep the GAA happy.  Plenty of young Irish players have still being recruited to the AFL via the rookie list anyway, just not the international scholarship list.
