Oceania score Day 1 win in NSW State U16 Championships

Apparently when they started mining at Broken Hill in NSW it was Adelaide (SA) that extended their train line in 1888 to export the material, so Broken Hill became linked to SA both economically and socially.  The links remain well over a century later.  Broken Hill uses SA's time zone not that of NSW, the SA arm of the ABC always includes Broken Hill in its coverage, and we see young footballers like Taylor Walker growing up barracking for the Adelaide Crows (who he now plays for, picked up via the NSW Scholarship program, although rumoured to be a target for GWS Giants).

He Mick, sounds like you're keen to change Australia's state boundaries.  West Aussies often talk about becoming a separate country - if they do that they would have a pretty handy International Cup side.

Note to any readers not familiar with Australian politics these last few posts about state border changes are all highly unlikely and mostly said with humour - about as likely as the USA saying to Canada "hey do you want Alaska, it's a better fit with you guys".  Then again Russia sold Alaska to the US to keep it away from Britain/Canada, so maybe the US can sell it to someone else to help with their recent debt issues.  We may have wandered away from discussing footy here...

true - mostly in humour, all those rascally Sandgropers have verged on nearing militancy a couple of times, or at least sounding like it.

btw - people who denounce Aust Footy as NOT being international tend to forget that Germany at 357K km2 would fit into NSW at 809K km2 twice with room left over for a handful of geographically smaller European nations.  Victoria is 'small' geographically, but at 237K km2, is 2/3rds the size of Germany.  So, in many respects, the AFL is 'big enough' to be an international sport (in essence, so too the 'domestic' leagues of the USA).

Day 3 results and a mixed bag for Oceania as they put in a respectable effort vs Riverina : Riverina 8.6.(54) defeated Oceania 4.2.(26) Goal kickers : Robert Toukoune (Vntu) 2, Ash Wear (NZ), Asiea To’a (Tng) alas, in the 2nd game, ACT/South Coast 13.6.(84) defeated Oceania 0.3.(3) reminder the day 1 and 2 games being a longer format (4 * 17 mins) than day 3 and 4 (2 * 17 mins). Tomorrow, day 4, Oceania take on Murray & GWS Giants. On form, both games will be a challenge.

With all the talking up of expansion of the elite AFL brand to NZ and especially in the context of grass roots of my particular footy demo, the ACT, I would like to say that this notion is not only insulting but a folly that will disenfranchise many in the process if this global cringe is ever realised.

I know that this site is a fraternity of global expansionism and very much the converted preaching to the converted, however i feel compelled to keep some of the contributors hyperbole in perspective, especially when you consider the status of this carnival in a national sense.

Rory, that has nothing to do with this article - we are following the fortunes of the Oceania Juniors in the NSW/ACT regionals - not currently discussing AFL clubs playing out there.

There is a team of young blokes from the Pacific (not even including the PNG boys, who make up the majority of playing numbers across the region) who are talented enough to win a few games.  What's your problem with that?

Are people not allowed to play footy outside Australia until Canberra/Tasmania have an AFL side?

Rory - as with Aaron, I'm not too sure of the relevance re this article/comments to 'elite' expansion (or not) into NZ (anytime in whatever timeframe into the future).   One might suggest that if you have a 'warning' of footballing doom and gloom based on a few kids kicking a footy around Vanuatu, Tonga or the Solomons, then please let us know!!!

Can you please explain what global cringe is?  Cultural cringe was a term that was used after WW2 to describe the preference for things from outside Australia  due to the feeling that things Australian were inferior, but global cringe I am not aware of?
