sorry proff you are wrong on a couple of items: 1 there is at least 1 rugby union club older and at last reading 1 soccer club than Melbourne and although not officially recorded as the first game " the gentleman of St.Kilda played ( I think it was Melb. Grammer ) a couple of weeks earlier which ended in a brawl and the game was called off. Later Wills, Harrison etc sat down and drew up the first rules. I love this game and read any history I can, all the above facts I have read on different occations and by different authors.

A Game of Our Own: Celebrating Australian Football Traditions in 2008

Great read. I have long held the belief that Australian society has overlooked the role Australian Football has played in the shaping of our national culture. Articles like this one are important, as they aid our critical appreciation of the game's social role, and identify positive cultural legacies that the code has bestowed upon Australia that many on this site wish to see exported around the globe.

Keep up the good work.
