The most worrying aspect of these one-sided results is that none of these games was a "Big 4 v minnow" match. What are the USA and Ireland goind to do to China and Finland respectively??? Ouch ouch ouch ... I can't watch.

Well, I did say two distinct divisions of eight would have been better. Perhaps even better would have been to "find" two extra teams and have three divisions of six. Reason is that all these "middle of the road" nations who didn't want to be in the bottom division might have accepted being in the second of three divisions.

I think all of us inolved in international footy understand these results and will accept them ... what concerns me is it gives the sceptics more ammunition to ridicule the whole concept.

Whilst no one likes to see a side getting smashed by 100 points or more, lets not forget that in the AFL GrandFinal last year Geelong won by 118 points!
Now I do know there's a big difference when you don't even score a single goal, that would be disappointing for the teams, but what this shows is in fact a selling point of the game itself: the best team wins and can win by alot! unlike soccer where the scoring is often not related to the play or necessarily reflective of who was the better team.
In Aussie Rules big margins are par for the course; it happens week in and week out at ALL levels of the game, sure we want a good even and exiting competition but this is just round one and unlike the soccer world cup there are no pre tournament qualifying series.

So don't panic, just get behind the losers and encourage them! Go Samurai's!!!

Excellent points there. In our sport the margin does generally reflect the difference in sides, and even sides in the same league that are really on the same kind of scale can have blow outs. Brian Dixon made a good point to the Chinese players along those lines, but that will probably be mentioned in the match report later.

But Ian is right, there's some painful scores set to come in the next two rounds. It was a difficult situations - those middle ranked teams wanted a chance to win the Cup, so a two division split would've been tough. Certainly it does emphasise that this must be the last time all teams are in together.

Leaving aside the question of how the IC competition looks, I guess the interesting thing is how do teams react to these sorts of defeats? And does it help the development of the game in those countries?

Would a team develop positively after such a defeat (via the experience of competing against a far stronger team) or would they react negatively, perhaps losing enthusiasm? Usually in a regular season you might only suffer one such defeat. But if you come out of this tournament having 3 such defeats in 3 games?

The Chinese looked like they would take the experience as a positive, but it's
a tough call. You'd probably expect them to come away from the
tournament with 3 big losses, and maybe 2 competitive games.

Once this tournament is over we can all look at it with the benefit of

I think in future there will have to be multiple divisions for the comp - I felt
when they made the announcement that there'd only be one division that the
big thrashings in the pool games wouldn't be good for the new sides. But
like I said, I guess we have to wait and see what the feedback is after the
