German archives shed possible light on Australian Football's indigenous origins

One issue that I have not heard an explanation for is the "high mark". I think it is clear that the "mark" comes from early forms of football and similar rules exist in soccer and rugby. But the idea that you could leap on top of someone to catch the ball seems to be unique to the Australian game. Any thoughts?
