That's amazing stuff. The AFL weren't exaggerating in their tweet about the deal: it's miles better than any TV package they've put together here in NZ. At least, any that I can remember.

Clearly this Sommet channel is a new one that's yet to launch, so there could still be a bump in the road ahead. But between the Saints-Swans match in Wellington and a pile of live, free-to-air games, the AFL is going to get a clear idea of the NZ market, how tough it is and what it could become.

TV coverage. Sorted. Guess I'll have to find something else to whine about.

II lived in Sydney when South Melbourne played exhibition games in Sydney and really appreciated watching them when they moved permantently. Then the Bears, Crows and Port were added to the AFL. I lived in Perth when the Fremantle Dockers were formed and enjoyed their enthusiasm. I watched from afar with excitement and a little amazement as the AFL introduced a second AFL team to Sydney. I'm starting to get those sensations again with NZ. Auskick games, exhibition games and TV coverage..It's one thing to dream or theorize of Australian Football overseas but tangible results are exciting.

Yeah I alluded to that in this story: Door opening for New Zealand AFL club and the TV deal seems to be yet another positive cog in the chain.

It's starting to really feel like an NZ AFL side is a distinct possibility in the next 20 years. All the more reason to hope GWS and Gold Coast get good support and become self-sufficient. If they fail I expect the AFL will feel burnt. If they succeed, they will feel emboldened.
