AFL hopes to address hole in international coverage

The AFLl's recently signed new contract with Espn has now (for all intents and purposes) taken AFL footy off the air for all N. American fans as well. Espn's argument that they are broadcasting games over their broadband web outlet is of no help to those of us who cannot access it there.
when i called espn about this their answer was, "well, we're going to broadcast the grand final on television, you should be grateful for that!" yeah! right! following this line of thinking they should only broadcast game seven of the NBA finals, or just the last game of the NCAA finals, only game seven of the world series, and only the super bowl after ignoring the rest of the NFL season!
my high speed access is, of necessity, over a satellite connection. "fair access" policies and the limitations of sat internet make access to weekly games impossible.
ESPN's "commitment" to sports worldwide seems to be not so much a commitment to sports as a commitment to controlling a business market for their own enrichment. This is a really disappointing development and from my perspective a mistake for the AFL policy makers.

That's sad to hear. Unfortunately we don't have the resources to delve into this too deeply, but AFANA are on top of it. There's a more detailed discussion on this topic in the thread here: http://www.afana.com/drupal5/news/200...mment-1135

It does look like the future is via the internet, which does trouble me. Nothing can compare with free to air where new viewers can stumble across a sport - and that applies not only to people in the US but just as much to the next generation of potential fans in Australia.
