The home and away season is now done and dusted in the AFL London competition and now the finals series is set to start. There are plenty of questions to be asked now as teams jostle for their spot on Grand Final day. Last weekend’s round just added to that list of questions.

The Wandsworth Demons stole the minor premiership away from the West London Wildcats after a massive 213 point victory over the Putney Magpies. The resultant percentage boost saw the Demons grab top spot in a psychological strike against the Wildcats ahead of their finals clash next weekend.

The Wildcats themselves inflicted another unwanted loss on the North London Lions. It wasn’t enough for them to hold top spot, but the result certainly has the Lions on shaky ground facing the resurgent Hawks in next weekend’s other semi-final.

The Hawks didn’t have it easy against the London Swans, home by just 22 points, but it meant they finished the home and away season on a winning streak which included the scalp of the Lions. It gives the Hawks a big sniff to go deeper into the finals.

So, two very even and exciting finals next weekend makes for a great start to the 2016 AFL London finals series. The Wildcats probably hold favouritism over the Demons only due to their last meeting which saw the Wildcats hold sway with a 13 point victory. The Demons, however, won their first encounter in Round One by 17 points, so maybe it is too close to call.

Likewise, the Lions won their Round Two match against the Hawks by 33 points before the hawks reversed that with a 36 point win against the Lions in Round Nine. In a season that saw a large proportion of one-sided games, it is remarkable how evenly matches the teams are for this coming weekend.

Below are the weekend results and ladders.

Wandsworth Demons 37 17 239 d Putney Magpies 4 2 26
West London Wildcats 15 14 104 d North London Lions 10 8 68
Wimbledon Hawks 11 5 71 d London Swans 7 7 49
