St Kilda are looking to get a jump on other AFL clubs for the signing of the next Irish code crosser. County Westmeath gaelic footballer Ray Connellan will spend the next month at the club in an extended audition with the club.

After being in the 2015 International Rules extended squad for Ireland, Connellan was a strong perfomer in the AFL’s Combine in Dublin in December. He then attended the AFL’s Academy camp in Brandeton Florida in January where a number of AFL clubs had a chance to assess him.

Connellan would likely have been an invitee to the AFL’s National Draft Combine in Melbourne in November but St Kilda are looking to get a jump on the competition and make a call on him before then.

The 191cm plays as a midfielder in the GAA for his club Athlone and county Westmeath.

International recruitment remains one of the few remaining avenues for clubs to secure talent outside the draft system on a first in, best dressed basis and Connellan would be signed as an Catergory B rookie.

St Kilda have previously had Irish players Colm Begley and Tommy Walsh on their list.
