AFL Canada Nationals kickoff this weekend : Day 2 Scores added

AFL Canada's first National Championships kick off today in Burnaby at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West (3677 Kensington Avenue, Burnaby, British Columbia V5B 4Z6).

Players have travelled from across Canada for this historic footy event that looks set to change the footy landscape for the positive in Canada going forward. You can watch the matches from 9am Vancouver time at the following link - https://www.ustream.tv/embed/10290903?html5ui

Games will be 18-a-side.

24 players on the roster per match.
The match will run for two (2) 20 minute halves with no time on.
Umpires will award a fifty (50) metre penalty.
If a match is drawn the result will stand (no extra time)
Queries, appeals or requests for rulings in relation to the Match Arrangements and Regulations should be directed to the Tournament Director

*Reports have filtered back to us that the Atlantic (or East) team were unable to compete under the rules and had 2 Australians play for them. This means that the team could take part in the tournament but they would receive no points for a win.

So BC won the men's despite Ontario having far more clubs and normally dominating Team Canada selection don't they (I'm not 100% sure for the last few years)?

I wonder if Ontario sent an under-strength side or if this purely the fruits of a strong junior footy in BC.---

By the way we'd love to have someone in Canada reporting for us. It's been years since we've been able to do it justice. Any Aussies over there or Canadians that used to play (or still do), we'd love to hear from you as we've tried a few options over the years but seem to struggle to get much news out of there other than scanning the websites. To me it's one of the exciting up and coming nations will so many similarities to Australia and quite a lot of emerging depth across multiple provinces but we don't get many reports.---

No real blow-outs in the scores, it appears to have been a pretty evenly contested all round, which I think augers well for footy across Canada.
Has anybody have any extra info (best players, goal scorers, goal of the comp, etc. AFL Canada website hasn't even published the results yet (Thursday evening SA time). Checked on BC Footy nil info either.

Speaking of websites, AFL Europe has this week come out with a couple of new (for AFL Europe anyway) concepts (hope they do actually become regular/weekly) eg. Match of the round/week, Tuesday around the grounds and Player of the week. Will be great to be able read about what is actually happening all across Europe in one place.

I also think this idea just has to aid the development of footy in the region (nothing like seeing your "name up in lights" especially for those who are just starting out in the sport. Goes for the teams as well.

Maybe AFL Canada could take note?

Even though this tournament was named "National" or "Provincial Championship" It is really national tryouts, so it is about the number of Canadians on the team. Also Vancouver is home to four full-blown teams and Edmonton and Calgary compete each as one representive team. Toronto certainly has the depth but their performance could be about selection availability, travel and home ground adavantage.
The good news is that almost everywhere something is going on and leagues/clubs are generally pumping out information. However, almost everybody is focused on their immediate target area - their club, their league and their country. When I travel I try to impress upon people the need to educate Aussies (and the rest of the world) as ultimately that is where the biggest leverage can be achieved.
Perhaps we need an AFL World to similar to AFL Europe to organize, assist, promote Australian Football since there are many topics unique to football outside of the AFL..AFL Europe seems to have had a positive influence on Europe wrt umpiring, coaching and organisation to name three but sometimes you need to collect feedback. The idea of training teachers in the sport of AFL seems to be one of those.

Still nothing on AFL Canada website (Saturday night SA time). You are so right Harley, getting news, information out there, raising awareness across the world is so important.

Tonight Channel Seven Adelaide news ran a clip about footy in Sweden featuring players from Bromma Vikings and Solna Axemen. Only lasted about 3 or 4 mins but it came only about half an hour or so before the Adelaide Crows v GWS Giants match got under way. Mark Soderstrom, Sevens Sports presenter and Football commentator presented the piece and it would have been seen by hundreds of thousands viewers already tuned to Seven for the AFL broadcast. I believe the vast majority of those viewers would have been very surprised to see that Footy is played in Sweden.

Maybe we should be encouraging our international leagues and clubs to make a video clip showcasing their footy and send them off to Mark Soderstrom at Channel Seven Adelaide. If he got enough of them he might be prompted into making it a regular segment as happened tonight. :-)

I really hope AFL Europe continue with their match and player of the week and around the grounds news items started this week. Maybe we need to encourage them also to send them off to the AFL every week, again if they received enough of these the AFL might just be forced to puublish them on the AFL website.

I must admit it took a while to pick my jaw up off the floor when I saw the Sweden segment, who knows where the Seven News team got it from and what prompted them to run it.

Harley, Ontario is the league based around Toronto, with the Ottawa Swans making up the tenth club in the league, and they have played at 18-a-side for years. I also believe that they have a four team reserves competition (played at 14-a-side) and if the women (four teams) are included number over 600 players. So BC winning this "inter-provincial" competition could be the result of them having a long running junior competition starting to bear fruit.

The comp could be likened to "State of Origin" but having no ex-pats the major restriction. If it had been club based as the US Nationals (or Champions League like) many of the best players around the country would not have played.

Not so much national "tryouts" but getting all (or at least as many as possible) of the best players in the one place at the same time and playing against each other.
