Just four rounds in to the new AFLCNE season and it is becoming clear that again the Manchester Mozzies will be the team to beat for the 2016 flag as they hope to continue their dynasty. But this year they have a new rival with the Wolverhampton Wolverines equally impressive, and equally damaging. Both sides sit undefeated and so far both have been devastating.

Last weekend the Wolverines took on last year’s grand finalists, the Sheffield Thunder crew. Depleted since last year, the Thunder were no match for the rejuvenated Wolverines – a team benefitting from improved numbers and to some degree the addition of former Birmingham Bears players. The result was a 197 point win in a lopsided game.

In the other match played, things didn’t get much easier for newcomers, the Merseyside Saints. After their initial caning from the Wolverines, this time they met the Manchester Mozzies, and even though the score line was closer (a positive), the Saints still had a tough afternoon. The Merseyside crew have had a baptism of fire, but they will also have taken away a new perspective of the levels needed to compete at this level and will already be on their way to addressing some of that. As for the Mozzies, they continued their relentless start to the season with a 265 point win.

In the other scheduled match, the Nottingham Scorpions got the points when the Huddersfield Rams were forced to forfeit.

The season so far has had an astonishing sequence of goalfests and blowouts, but it is hoped that as the season wears on teams will improve, grow and close the gap on these lopsided results.

Round 4 Results:

Wolvehampton Wolverines 31 20 206 d Sheffield Thunder 0 9 9
Manchester Mozzies 41 26 272 d Merseyside Saints 0 7 7
Nottingham Scorpions d Huddersfield Rams (Forfeit)
