Zach's super goal gift to Ireland

The Irish Warriors will receive a nice present to take home with them when they visit Melbourne for IC14. Courtesy of Zach Tuohy's super goal during the NAB Challenge match on the weekend (video below).

NAB are giving away $500 worth of Sherrin footballs to the junior club of the player who kicks a supergoal during the NAB challenge. However with Tuohy having no junior Aussie rules club the AFL Media Manager Patrick Keane has confirmed that the balls will be presented to the Irish team and then taken back to Ireland for use in development there.

Zach's home GAA club should get the benifit as they taught him to play football not the Irish AFL team.

Hey Duffman.  I am sensitive to GAA clubs suffering the loss of players to the AFL, but I'm not sure giving them some Sherrins will make them feel any better!

OK they could give them a cash equivalent but the AFL and their sponsors can't really be expected to be in the business of promoting / supporting other sports.

I think it's a nice gesture and it show that the AFL is taking International Footy into consideration. They could have just picked a junior team at random and no doubt some readers would have prefered the balls to go to needy kids in Australia, but instead they're off to Ireland so hopefully there's a budding Zach Tuohy at a high school or junior club who will develop a love for the game because of it.
