Tension rises between Barbarians and Sharks for charity AFL game

“The Barbarians are either too old, slow and fat, or inexperienced boys. We are young, strong, fit and experienced. We will destroy them.” So said the Coach of the national AFL team, the Solomon Sharks, when interviewed yesterday. National coach Job Vulita went onto say that he hopes it will be a fair game, but he expects it will be a lopsided affair and the national team will prove far superior to the Barbarians, a team made up of mature-age expatriates and young Solomon Islands men.

The Barbarians have their share of injury concerns, with promising forward gun and bald old man Simon Whitehead now unavailable due to a strained heartstring. Barbarians coach Mick Nunan explained, “We are training to play, and we’ll be playing hard. We’ll take some collateral damage as part of this approach, but the Sharks can expect a physical encounter from the moment the whistle is blown for the full four quarters. Our only edge on the field will be our larger middle-aged bodies, so we may as well try and use them before we run out of puff.”

Both teams are in their last week of training before the big game on Saturday 10th November at 2pm at St Joseph’s Tenaru. The SIAFL are planning a big family fun day as part of the festivities with 2 jumping castles, face-painting, the Frangipani Ice Cream truck, a live band, cold drinks and BBQ, and more. Everyone is welcome to come along, bring the family, and join in the fun.
