The AFL today announced the Grand Final of the 2012 FOXTEL Cup – the state-league based knockout competition that was introduced last season – would be played between Claremont and Werribee at Patersons Stadium in WA on Thursday August 2, at 7.35pm local time.

Claremont was runner-up in the inaugural competition in 2011, losing last year’s final to Williamstown, and won its way through to the grand final again with victories over West Adelaide, Mt Gravatt and Port Melbourne. Werribee, which qualified for inclusion in the competition for the first time this year, won its place in the final with successes against Burnie, West Perth and Morningside.

The match will be broadcast live and exclusively on FOX FOOTY from 9:30pm EST.

AFL General Manager National and International Development Andrew Dillon said the AFL congratulated Claremont and Werribee on their efforts in qualifying for the final and said the AFL had been delighted with the on-going strength of the competition in exposing the quality of football played at state league level across the country.

At the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, 13 mature-age state league players were listed by AFL clubs and Mr Dillon said the FOXTEL Cup continued to be a key plank around the strategy to provide more opportunities for players to build a career in the game.

Mr Dillon said he wanted to again thank FOX SPORTS and naming rights sponsor Foxtel for their support of the FOXTEL Cup, along with key support partners Coles and Burley Sekem.

The winning team of the 2012 Grand Final will collect a $60,000 prize. Under competition rules, matches are quarters each of eighteen (18) minutes set time, plus time-on from the last 3 minutes only (20 minutes approximately total per quarter), to ensure they do not overly impact on club commitments to their on-going state league season.
