While it is hard to pin down exactly where the US footy season starts, we can confirm that it is definitely underway. Leagues such as the Southern California AFL (which this year includes San Diego), Arizona AFL, Sac Footy Spring League, Atlanta’s AARFL and the Portland AFL have all been up and running for a number of weeks now and in some cases months.
In what was probably one of the first travelling matches for the year the San Diego Lions defeated the Las Vegas Gamblers in a Metro match at the end of March.

Things warmed up in the first two weeks of April with Columbus easily accounting for newcomers Cleveland by 135 points and Houston 21.11 (137) also having a big win over Baton Rouge 6.4 (40).
The Tulsa Buffaloes continued their club development with a trip down to Dallas. They were unable to fill a full team and Dallas loaned a number of players for the match to become a friendly – scores were reported as Dallas getting over the line by 22 points.
This past weekend a number of games got underway with the weekend dominated by the John Harrell cup in Louisville. Columbus, Ohio Valley (Cincinatti/Louisville combine), Chicago and a combined all comers team contested the cup. The eventual winner was Nashville who will be glad to have their season off to a good start.
Austin hosted Dallas and Houston (combined with Baton Rouge players) in a three way tournament. Dallas took the honours defeating both their opponents and Austin accounted for Houston in the battle for minor placings.
The other men’s matches on the weekend took place in Boston. The Demons hosted the New York magpies in the NEAFL with the Magpies winning on the road 8.7 (55) to the Demons 6.5 (41). There was also a reserves match on the day with the Magpies taking the honours in that match as well.
US Women’s footy headed across the border with both Boston and New York ladies heading to Montreal to play. The Montreal Angels performed best at home winning both their matches and Boston defeating New York to record their first win for the year.
