The Greater Western Sydney GIANTS have welcomed the announcement of the AFL’s radio broadcast partners for 2012-16.

Acting GIANTS Chief Executive David Matthews said the club was particularly delighted that ABC Radio had agreed to broadcast all of the GIANTS home and away matches into New South Wales during the period of the broadcast agreement.

“This is a big win for GIANTS supporters in New South Wales and I want to thank the ABC for making this important commitment as we enter the AFL competition in 2012,” Mr Matthews said. “The ABC has a proud and rich history in AFL broadcasting in Australia and delivers a vital service to fans in regional areas to follow the game.”

He also thanked the AFL’s other broadcast partners - 3AW, Triple M, SEN, FIVEaa, 6PR, 2UE and 4BC in metropolitan markets – and regional partners K-Rock (Geelong), Gold FM (Gold Coast), Crocmedia, Southern Cross Austereo and the National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS).

“There’s going to be a lot of interest in the AFL’s 18th and newest club and we’re excited to have the opportunity to work with all the broadcast partners to help tell the story of the GIANTS in the club’s inaugural year.”

Mr Matthews said this week was a big week for the GIANTS culminating with the 2011 NAB AFL Draft in Sydney on Thursday. The GIANTS will have 11 of the first 14 selections as it builds its team ahead of next year’s Round 1 match against the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium on March 24.

“This week we are showcasing the game to Sydney and also witnessing the birth of a new club in the GIANTS. It’s an exciting opportunity for everyone involved as we look ahead to 2012,” he said.

The AFL also confirmed today that radio coverage would continue on ABC Radio Australia that broadcasts internationally.  There were some concerns this year that the service may longer broadcast footy to the world.

Each weekend Game 2 or 3 on the weekend on a Saturday afternoon will be broadcast, and Game 7, 8 or 9 of the round would be broadcast on the Sunday afternoon during the home and away rounds.

The Grand Final will also continue to be broadcast on this service.
