The US Womens team the Freedom, in prepartion for the International Cup were recently put through their paces, training in Austin TX. The Youtube video below is a photo montage of the sessions. Women's footy in the US might not have the same depth as the men's but they are nevertheless experienced in tournament footy and international travel and be looking to make an impact on their second tour to Australia.

We can generally predict quite accurately how the men's teams will go in the International Cup, because there has been enough cross over of games between nations and enough history. But there has been very little for the women, so for me this will be one of the more interesting aspects of IC11, the relative strengths will be a real unknown quantity.

Have to agree with you here Brett, tho I believe USA and Canada have played some women's matches and Ireland defeated Italy at 9's at the EU Cup last year. Not much use in trying to rank the teams with what has been played up til now tho.

Any word on the make up of the combined Multicultural/Indigenous team?

I'm assuming the multicultural players will be drawn from immigrants playing here and the indigenous players are Indigenous Australians, and if this is so, are the rest of the Australian players so much better than all the rest that we would only see absolute thrashings if we actually played an Australian National Team?

I know that Freedom have played some matches in Aussie, how did they go?

Would an full blown Aussie team be so much better as in the men's or is the gap between Aussie women and the other countries a bit narrower?

IF that is the case couldn't we play a full Aussie team and then the women's competition would be a genuine World Championship?

Other option to consider if not a full Aussie team why not each of the states play in the comp, it still could be a World Championship.

England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland play as seperate Countries/Unions in the Rugby World Cup. Why not the the Aussie states in women's footy?

Love to hear other ideas/opinions about this!

The Freedom weren't disgraced in Australia, but a national Australian women's team would probably still be a bit far ahead.

However, having said that, the gap in nowhere near as big in women's as in men's footy, so a genuine world championship including an Australian national team could potentially happen not too far into the future.

The Irish and Italian women's teams I think are recruiting some of their respective citizens resident in Australia, so they may be pretty strong at the IC.

I'm guessing the Multicultural women's team might have a bit to do with the Auburn Tigers in Sydney - there's going to be a segment about them on George Negus at 6.30 tonight.
