More like a black hole than a sun, players who are out of contract are drawn to lucrative contract offers from the Gold Coast Suns. The Suns are allowed to offer up a contract to one player from each existing club that have a player out of contract as of the end of this season.

All Australian Defender Nathan Bock and exciting young defender Nathan Krakouer are the first two of these transfers to have signed with the Gold Coast SUNS for its inaugural AFL season. More will be announced in the coming weeks.

Bock, 27, has played 113 games for the Adelaide Crows and won the club’s Best & Fairest Award (Malcolm Blight Medal) in 2008. Krakouer, 22, has played 40 AFL games and was recruited from Claremont in Western Australian by Port Power in 2006.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO Travis Auld said the announcement of the two players represents an exciting time for the Club as the next stage of the list build in readiness for the 2011 launch of the club in the AFL.

Both Adelaide and Port Adelaide are disappointed to have lost these players, and in Port Adelaide's case they are upset at both Krakouer and his manager for failing to discuss the matter with the club.

The AFL released the following this afternoon to detail the compensation to the two clubs that lost players.

Under the List Establishment Rules for the Gold Coast Football Club, the AFL's 17th team has the right to select one uncontracted player from each of the current 16 AFL clubs, with a compensation package to be determined in one of five bands, based on the new contract offer to the player and his future earning / playing capacity.

AFL Legal Affairs General Manager Andrew Dillon said the Gold Coast Football Club had officially advised contract details to the AFL for Nathan Bock (Adelaide Crows) and Nathan Krakouer (Port Adelaide).

It had been determined that the Adelaide Crows would receive a Third Band selection (end of round one selection) for Bock, while Port Adelaide would receive a Fourth Band selection (Round two selection) for Krakouer.

In full detail, Mr Dillon said the compensation package in each case was explained as follows:

Adelaide Crows - End of Round One selection.

The selection for Nathan Bock may be activated by the Adelaide Crows at the end of round one in any one of the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014 NAB AFL Draft Selection Meetings. The selection will be immediately placed after the selection of the premiership team of that season (which concludes round one), and any compensation pick under AFL Rule 6 (In 2010, West Coast will receive a selection under this rule). In the case of two or more clubs activating an end of round one selection in the one AFL Draft Meeting, the club(s) that is (are) placed lower on the premiership ladder in that particular season, will be placed first in the selection order.

For the selection to be activated for the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, the Adelaide Crows will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by November 5, 2010.

For the selection to be activated for any of the years 2011-2014 in the NAB AFL Draft of that particular year, the Adelaide Crows will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by the last Tuesday of that particular year, prior to the start of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The club has the right to on-trade its compensation selection to another club.

If the club on-trades its compensation selection to another club, the selection may be used in that year's NAB AFL Draft Selection meeting, or in any other year up to the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

Port Adelaide - Round Two selection.

The selection for Nathan Krakouer may be activated by Port Adelaide after its round two selection in any one of the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014 NAB AFL Draft Selection Meetings. The selection will be immediately placed behind the Round Two selection of Port Adelaide in that particular season. (Ie, should Port Adelaide earn the right for selection 22, the compensation selection would be number 23, if Port Adelaide earn the right for selection 31, the compensation selection would be number 32 etc.)

For the selection to be activated for the 2010 NAB AFL Draft, Port Adelaide will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by November 5, 2010.

For the selection to be activated for any of the years 2011-2014 in the NAB AFL Draft of that particular year, Port Adelaide will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by the last Tuesday of that particular year, prior to the start of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The club has the right to on-trade its compensation selection to another club.

Mr Dillon said the lodgement of the respective contract offers to players Bock and Krakouer by the Gold Coast FC meant the club could not automatically select another uncontracted player from either of those two clubs.

For the benefit of any media who may not understand the List Establishment Rules, Gold Coast FC is allowed to select any player who is delisted by an AFL club, even if it has already selected an uncontracted player from that particular club. Further, Gold Coast FC is able to trade with any club to add a player to its list, even if it has already selected an uncontracted player from that club.
