Kevin Sheedy’s tri-series suggestion

International Rules

Whether it’s the work of the martians or the seagulls, Kevin Sheedy is not often backward in coming forward. For a plumber – he can be somewhat lateral. His latest suggestion is reported in the IrishExaminer Sheedy proposes novel ‘tri-series’ idea.

The following is lifted from the article by Daragh Ó Conchúir, dated August 26. Sheedy also put forward this idea earlier this year in an 'open letter' published here in the Daily Telegraph.

"What I’d really love to see is an international rules tri-series played between indigenous Australia, non-indigenous Australia and Ireland," Sheedy said. "It would be great for the development of the series, if the Australians and the Irish have the courage to do it. It’s an opportunity for indigenous people to be leaders of their own people on a tour to Ireland where they have never toured before. Irish people don’t know much about indigenous Australians. It should be the next step in the development in the series.

"It would be fair to say that the two groups have a lot in common. Irish people and indigenous people have had a pretty tough life."

The former Essendon coach re-affirmed his interest in the development of international rules, revealing that he had tried to make the series a more global event during his time as coach.

"I met up with the secretary of the Gaelic Association on the East Coast of America about three years ago to talk about bringing the Australian team.

"I’ve always looked for ways to play international rules in America on the way to Ireland. I’m always looking for the chance."

Whilst I agree with a lot of Sheedy's proposals, I think this one is misguided. Keep the focus on Australian Rules instead of International Rules. I remember a good 10 years back they considered an Australia-Ireland-USA series, but unless it's promoting our game, what's the point? If most Americans don't understand Aussie Rules, how is it beneficial to promote a different set of rules? Even if similar, the ball being round changes gameplay entirely. As for an indigenous team; if they're already passionate about Australian Football, isn't introducing them to the hybrid game more likely to make them interested in this hybrid game rather than more passionate about football?

Sheedy should be getting behind the Australian Rules Football League of Ireland. Encourage the AFL to only consider Irish players in ARFLI; this potentially appeases the GAA as players aren't being poached "directly", whilst it encourages GAA players to defect to ARFLI in order to be considered by AFL clubs, increasing the standard of the league in Ireland and potentially support for it too.

On a separate note; can someone in Ireland tell me are the Irish who are interested in the AFL interested because of International Rules, because of the Irish players or because they genuinely find Aussie Rules entertaining?

Sheedy is a big proponent of developing Aboriginal culture through footy and this proposal is certainly in line with those objectives. I think that an international rules game in the US would be a great addition. The big US cities of New York, Boston and Chicago have large Irish American heritages. This would be a great way for both codes to sell their games into the US. It also has precedence as the Gallahs (which Sheedy played with) played against a New York team on the trip to Ireland.

I've speculated before that the IR format could easily be the 'game of the 21st century'. In that, it's packaged to fit into existing stadia and is different enough to soccer, rugby U/L and American football.

Alas, the AFL is about Australian football and the IR game is way too much like the Gaelic game. Not sure that the GAA could ever get themselves into a position to push it internationally. If they were the 'professional' party in the AFL-GAA arrangement - then perhaps. The greatest danger then would be if IR was taken to the US and perhaps 'exploded' (in relative terms) over there.

Perhaps we should just focus on getting Aust Footy 9's into the Olympics or C'wealth games!!!

It is an interesting area for debate. I wrote this article some years ago - when the IRS was looking more promising than it does these days - there is certainly a case to be made for highlighting both Aussie and Gaelic codes in the USA though with the risk of the hybrid itself taking off - http://www.worldfootynews.com/article...3074132207

And on a wider topic about the future - http://www.worldfootynews.com/article...3145523531

I suppose since then the greater organisation and growth of Australian Football itself has shifted the agenda. And if 9's could get more emphasis around Australia as well as internationally - then like Rugby 7's - there is scope for more mainstream growth.

Still something about the ease with which Inter-rules could attract soccer players with the round ball and goal-net and bit of biff and without the Gaelic difficult to master emphasis on flicking the ball into hands from the ground or carrying the ball only 4 steps.
