No. It's Under 16s. The main people attending are talent scouts for the AFL clubs, friends and family, and some media.

Now that the NAB Under 16's is finished I can publish an Under 16's World Ranking.
I have only used the Oceania Champs 09 and the NAB Under 16's 2010 as data for this proposal. I know Brett has big objections because the World XVlll and South Pacific teams were not true Under 16's squads. But as the inclusion of over-age players in those squads did not enable them to defeat any of the Aussie regional teams I reckon we can reasonably accept them as Under 16's for the sake of this exercise.
Only the Oceania teams have started at 40 points. I have started the Division 2 teams at 48 points and the Division 1 teams at 54 points, the reality being these teams are of a higher standard anyway.

Using only the Oceania Champs 09 and 2010 Nab Under 16's matches this is how the teams rank.

1. Western Australia 55.88 Ranking Points
2. South Australia 54.60
3. Victoria Country 53.00
4. Victoria Metro 52.53

5. Tasmania 51.23
6. Queensland 49.43
7. NSW/ACT 48.79
8. Northern Territory 47.16
9. South Pacific 46.84
10. World XVlll 44.56

11. Nauru 41.75
12. Tonga 41.48
13. Samoa 40.37
14. New Zealand 39.81
15. Fiji 36.59

Is the points gap between Div 1 and Div 2 teams realistic and likewise the gap between the Div 2 teams and the Oceania teams?
I know Tonga won the Oceania Champs(on percentage) so the Tongans could well ask why are they ranked below Nauru. The reason is that there being only 5 teams at the Oceania's New Zealend v Samoa and Tonga v Fiji matches both teams started on 40 points. Whereas Nauru's first match was against Samoa who had lost against New Zealand. Nauru started at 40 points and Samoa were at 39 points.

What do people think about the ranks so far, really love some feedback please.

what we just need now is a few more 'junior league' tours of these nations,

similar to the VAFA U18s that went to NZ.

Need to get things like a Gippsland (for example) invitational squad to do a 5 nations tour of say Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Nuaru and NZ or the like. Doesn't always have to be the best team on the paddock - - nor the 'best' players selected - - but, using similar 'personal development' goals as the Flying Boomerangs.

Increasing the international element across junior level footy in Australia could only be beneficial. You'd think.

btw - interesting story on AFL website about content based website promotion in China. Internet helps sell AFL in China

what'd be good out of the U16s is if there's any 'review' from a Kevin SHeehan type around internationals most likely to be rookied/scholarshipped.

Also, a coaches 'report' from each of the international camps would be cool.

If anyone come's across something??

G'Day Michael.
The website story tends to suggest that the social contact and therefore "the human interest" angle is just as effective as "The Blockbuster" match in promoting the game in non-footy playing regions. That is something that I have mentioned in the lead -up to the NAB Under 16's in Sydney. Several "human interest" stories about the players made it onto the national newscasts. I just wonder how many free tickets(with half price for a friend or such) were given away to all the schools within bike riding distance of the venue for the Under 16's matches. IF they had even just half a dozen teens (who'd never been to an Aussie rules match before) turn up, who could now say, at some time down the track, I saw that guy(AFL Player) play at the Under 16's at Blacktown a couple of years ago it would be a huge promotion of the game.
Even Brett didn't expect attendence figures because it was only the Under 16's.
Only people that would go along were family and friends and coaches and media(who no doubt got free tickets!
Really!! What about the curious that can't afford to go to Swan's matches?
If the World v SP match hadn't been on the day it was my daughter who is from SA would have gone along. She is used to watching Aussie rules at local level so gets as much out of the game as at AFL level(has only seen 2 game of AFL)

Cam it wouldn't have been a ticketed event, it would've been open and free entry - there's no demand to watch Under 16s. I agree it would've been good to get local schools along to watch. So it wouldn't have been a matter of giving away tickets, it would've been a matter of convincing locals schools to let and get their students to go.

My objections to the Under 16s rankings are many, and ironically some of them are the same as your objections to our 2008 World Rankings, i.e. they are opinion based rather than rely just on results. To have the teams fall into a sensible order you've had to skew the initial rankings points, even though the system is designed to have everyone start at the same level. And because there's no cross over between divisions the top div two sides will climb and the bottom div 1 sides will fall, and if you didn't skew the initial points, they'd overlap which would make a mockery of the rankings. I analyse scientific data every day and so I'm very much in favour of using data where possible but skewed data or different types of data lumped together makes for worse than poor results, it gives misleading results or confidence in anomalous results that are not based on reality.

The adult rankings are different in that, although suffering some similar issues, have a bigger data set and more restriction of criteria and overlap matches between teams at different levels. By all means keep toying with the Under 16s rankings but don't be subverted into thinking they are telling you more than the order that the teams finished in the recent tournaments, and the relative strength of those tournaments, because that's how you had to skew it to get it to work. If the same results were repeated over and over you'd get teams climbing above others who they'd have no hope of beating.

I'll try to get some info out about the adult rankings in the next week or so.

G'day Brett
OK! free drink or pie to eat at the event. 6 kids who might never have gone otherwise.

Yes I agree we have not stuck to the rules of the Senior Ranking scheme in that the initial Starting Points were skewed to show the difference between the standards of the three groups of teams. Yes the results do show with one exception where the teams in each comp finished but if you look at previous Under 16's comps they haven't always finished in that order. I reckon its the first time Vic Metro have come last.
With the artificial spread that is there, even if Nauru continues win against the Samoa and the like, their ranking points are unlikely to climb above the teams in the group above. If we project into the future these results are very unlikely to be repeated over and over anyway.
Any new teams like PNG would start at 40 points and even if they prove to be as successful as many believe then when their points get up around the Northern Territory or World XVlll then it could well be time to play against them.
Very few matches involved, but we have to start somewhere. Will be interesting to see what happens next year if PNG do get a run, and the South Pacific and World XVlll's get another run on the park.
Remember a lot of the early games in the Senior ranking were played under different circumstances than now.
At least it is based on match results even tho some factors are artificial eg. over-age players(tho that is an attempt to level the teams out a bit) No teams scored the max of 2 ranking points and there were only five 40pt bonus matches.

I agree would be great to hear a bit more about individual players. Joseph Lo Buluk seemed to amongst best. Wonder just how good he is? Was it just because of his height or does he show genuine potential to be a chance at a high level?

The Results by South Pacific in this competition with mostly Under 16's in this Championships should surely now show the AFL that investing more funds in this area will probably produce more AFL players of the future than NSW will in the near future. We have been in NSW's a very long time now and yet they are generally the weakest state even though we spend an awful lot of money in that state. I'm not saying we should not do it, but its quite obvious that the money will return more if spent in NZ, PNG, Nauru, Samoa, Fiji, etc. Its probably bad timing now because they are investing in another AFL side in NSW's, but maybe, just maybe they should have invested in a side from the South Pacific, based in Auckland??????
