Big regional England contingent in GB Bulldogs at Euro Champs

Europe

The Great Britain Bulldogs have named a squad drawn mainly from England's Southern and Central-North West leagues for their upcoming 2010 European Championships campaign. With the EC2010 coinciding with the AFL London finals series, a number of the GB regulars will be playing for their domestic clubs early August, which opens the opportunities for new faces among the Bulldogs.

GB coach Mark Pitura says the squad was chosen mostly from the teams that competed in the Brit Cup in Southampton on July 3rd, and is a good mix of youth and experience, lead by veterans Adam "Skippy" Bennett from Reading and Rob Fielder from Chippenham.

"As you can see, most players come from regional teams outside of London. A few exciting players to watch are Martyn Hinchey (Southampton Titans) in the ruck, 6 foot 6 Full forward Lee Tarn (Chippenham Redbacks) and goal sneak Mark Todd (Reading Kangaroos)."

The Bulldogs will be hoping for a strong showing at the Championships, having a history as being one of the "Big 3" alongside Ireland and Denmark, and being the only European nation ever to have defeated the Irish.

Eight players in the squad are from the Central & North West League, with Huddersfield providing two players, Wolverhampton three, Manchester two, and Sheffield one.

Six are based in the Southern League, with three from Southampton, two from Chippenham and one from Bournemouth. The Northern League's only representative is Steve Allen from the Newcastle Centurions.

The WARFL have provided three players, with South Cardiff Panthers pair Andrew Attack and Mark Horsman joining Tom Gillard from the Cardiff Double Blues.

The seven AFL London players in the squad are Reading trio Adam Bennett, Mark Todd and Gareth Blackstaffe-Turner, Andy Brockett from the London Swans, Ross Ashman and Paul Francis from Wimbledon, and Harry Triggs from West London.

Is the coach, Mark Pitura, related to the famous VFL player, John Pitura? (Sth Melb, Richmond)

Mark is John's son.

John played for Richmond and South Melbourne in the 70s, then Mark played for Essendon, Collingwood and Richmond before moving the England and playing for the Putney Magpies. He's been the GB Bulldogs coach for a while now.

It's a bit disappointing that not all AFL London players will be available, although it seems there still a reasonable number in there. I would assume that if he was available Lewis Brackstone would have made it. He's from West London and GB's only rep in the World XVIII and at 17 years and 190cm he seems to be a promising player.

Great to see another 3 Welshman from the WARFL make the Bulldogs squad!

From 2008 that's now 9 Welsh players from the WARFL who have represented GB being David Carpenter, Liam Corbett, Tom Gillard, Tom Judson, Gareth Sturge (Cardiff Double Blues), Andrew Atack, Ed Doe, Mark Horsman, David James (South Cardiff Panthers). Also not forgetting AFL Britain Southern league's Tom Case from the Chippenham Redbacks who is also the captain of Wales.

Great work from the WARFL, the numbers can only get better as time goes on. Good work as well to first-year English clubs Wolverhampton and Sheffield in getting some reps in.

I'm wondering why there haven't been more SARFL players in the GB Bulldogs over the years... presumably it's partly because they haven't been at the events such as the Brit Cup that act as selection trials?

I think there are some Scotsmen in there who play at English clubs, but none from the SARFL so far.

Is Tom Gillard a relation of the new Aussie PM, she is Welsh born after all - the British Bulldogs might be able to get her on board along ala the Western Bulldogs?

Lol, the same thought crossed my mind. No idea if they're related... don't know how common a name it is.

Her original home town was Barry, home of the Vale Warriors who kicked off in the WARFL this year.

You never know LOL

I'll ask Tom next time I see him and see if he knows of any connection..

Nick Baker president of the Vale Warriors was in contact with Ms Gillard's office before she became PM and she seemed quite interested about footy in Wales especially in her home town Barry.

It would be great to have her on board with the GB Bulldogs and as mentioned she is a supporter of the AFL's Bulldogs, so why not!
