The Pacific Islands won a tightly contested match over the North Queensland All Stars in Cairns on Wednesday night to take out the inaugural Pacific Islands Forum AFL Challenge Cup.

The match was enjoyed by many delegates from the Forum including the Prime Ministers of New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Nauru. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tossed the coin to get the match underway (pictured left).

The final score was Islanders 8.12 (60) to the All Stars 7.6 (48).

Best on Ground for the Pacific Islanders was Carl Williams from New Zealand, with Daniel Dai from the Manunda Hawks in Cairns the best for the All Stars. The Hon Duncan Kerr, Parliamentary Secretary to Pacific, presented the BOG’s.

If something like this doesn’t help the promotion of our sport in the Pacific it is hard to imagine what would!
