The city of Cambridge hope to join the likes of Derby, Leicester and Wolverhampton in creating a new Aussie Rules team in central England for the 2010 season.

Cambridge University have been playing Aussie Rules in annual varsity matches versus Oxford since 1921, however there has never been a non-university Cambridge team. The Cambridge Hippos aim to end that, and are starting early to recruit anyone interested in playing, coaching or sponsoring the newly formed team for 2010.

Currently playing for the Birmingham Bears, the city where he is studying, Tim Smith has lead the push for a Cambridge-based Aussie Rules team, “There has already been healthy interest in the club player-wise, and a potential sponsor as well. However to really drive this team forward we are seeking an Aussie Rules enthusiast who is permanently based in and around Cambridge, as the majority of those interested so far are university students like myself.”

If you are interested in joining the Cambridge Hippos, they can be contacted via their Facebook group.
