The Queensland Under 16 Championships have recently concluded with the PNG team winning one and losing two of their matches. The PNG side easily accounted for the Suncoast Power but were overwhelmed by the Northern Raiders and the Country Kookaburras. In pleasing recognition of the football talent located in PNG Naime Gordon and Collins Brand-Slim were selected in the State team. Collins Brian-Slim was also selected by the PNG coaching staff as their player of the tournament.

As is familiar with International teams gathering a side means that many players must travel a huge distance to be considered and this PNG representative side was no different. AFL Oceania Manager and PNG stalwart Andrew Cadzow said “While the initial purpose of the trip is football orientated, we hope that much more will come from the chance to see another country. It is important to develop the players as footballers, but it is also important to help improve their way of life once they get back home.Going on the train is something these boys have never done before. They have never been to the Gabba either so we are going to go and watch a game which will be great for them."

PNG coach Ray Hall believes that the priority should be using AFL as a tool “for the boys to grow and improve themselves. By using AFL, the PNG kids have a chance to take everything they have learnt back home and use it in their community."
