USFooty Preview: San Diego Lions

North America

As we move towards the start of the 2009 season, USFootyNews.com will be previewing the Top 10 teams in USFooty as voted in the preseason USFootyNews.com and WorldFootyNews.com poll.

At No. 4 is the San Diego Lions. San Diego finished the 2008 season ranked 5 with a 3-2 record in the regular season and a record at the Nationals Tourney of 1-2. San Diego dropped down from their previous heights in 2008 and are looking to turn things around in 2009 by concentrating on developing footy in the San Diego area.

According to Head Coach, Simon Schenk, "last year was a very successful year for the Lions. In particular, it was a successful recruiting year for us, especially after losing a large contingent of our regular players from the past years. Also, at Nationals we took twenty seven players, of which twenty two were American and it was the first Nationals for ten of our players. So to have such a large American contingent and so many blokes playing their first Nationals, I think was a great testament to the club, and the work of the Lions Board."

In 2009, Schenk plans to develop the local competition and develop the team to replace the likes of former captain Brendan McDonald. "A player and leader of his calibre in impossible to replace, and we hope to see him back in San Diego soon. Fortunately we have had some new blokes down at the club over the past few weeks, and had a very successful first Metro game last weekend, with twenty four blokes strapping on the boots. Overall our main goal this year is to play lots of footy at a local level, and if we go to Nationals that will be a bonus. Clearly in such tough economic times, playing footy in a local setting is the highest priority."
