Parade of Nations at Telstra Dome (Buddy beauty!)

International Cup 2008

The International Cup teams attended the Telstra Dome last night to parade at half time, and to watch a great football spectacle, if not a great game. The great expectation of seeing Hawthorn star Lance Franklin and Carlton star Brendan Fevola achieve their 100th goal for the season drew a full house of over 49,000. Franklin achieved his in the first quarter and we have no official confirmation that any of the International Cup representatives were among the approximately 5000 people who rushed onto the ground to congratulate him (though there were reports that the Samoans were amongst them).

Fevola failed, just, to reach the mark himself at the end of the match, but the chance of the double kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. The Parade of Nations at half time saw all nations march out in alphabetical order (and included multicultural division teams - even Tonga whose attendance has been the source some mystery). There were some mixed responses to nations including some (hopefully good natured and based on sporting competitiveness) boos for NZ, Great Britain and the USA. The nations all assembled in the centre of the ground to be introduced before marching off again.

Some pictures of the night (including the Parade and invasion following Frankilin's 100th goal) below.

Pretty sad to spend thousands of dollars of your own money, work your butt
of for a couple of years and then get boo'ed when you wear your colors on
the Dome.

That's really sad if that's the case.

Personally I'd just like to pass on my unqualified admiration for the 16 squads who have made the effort to come out.

Alas, most AFL fans still seem to have just no idea. Glad though to see even people like Mike Sheahan down last Wednesday and then reporting positively on the day.

It's ironic, that, given the self interest of many AFL fans who care more for their club than the 'good of the game' - - it's hard enough to 'sell to them' investment and expansion in QLD and NSW, let alone internationally.

It's kind of expected though (the booing). Aussies will always give Yanks, Poms and Kiwis a bit of a stir. It's probably not optimal and I forgot to ask anyone today whether they took offence, but I wouldn't get too upset or serious about it just yet.

But yes, do agree it's still a hard slog to get the average AFL fan on board.

In response to Chris's comment on the boo'ing from the crowd at the Hawks v Carlton clash towards the kiwis, poms and yanks. I just have to say that i wish it had never happened BUT the truth is given the Australian sense of humour its actually a complement, if theres anyone we want to beat more its you guys and thats basically out of respect for good competition, and the other truth is out of all my mates who are into footy i cant think of one that has any idea of the international scene, the crowd probably didn't have any idea what was going on. Also out of all the team i'd give the US team the most respect because of how you have so professionally imbraced the game and the passion you have which is easy to see in the doco you made. Good luck with the rest of the comp and bad luck against Sth Africa.

The AFL have been MUCH improved in getting IC video out and available in a timely fashion this time (maybe all the unsubtle hints helped). We've often been sitting next to their guys that are trying to get info out - a special mention for Tony Abate who has boundless enthusiasm for this, going above and beyond the call of duty.

So you can find lots of video here including some very good footage from the Parade of Nations.

agree with Chris its pretty sad - the efforts of those team members going to Australia to play are fantastic, perhaps that could be mentioned in an intro next time ( perhaps it was) - not just working for years, playing hard to increase skills, and raising the money to go, but using up annual vacation time etc - each one should get a medal !

Would like to thank very much you people who are working to give us all the information - couldn't make it to Australia but have followed the matches every time thanks to your site and YOUR hard work - medals to you too! Love the commentaries, which bring those scores to life.

Three extra photos added, from the Japanese perspective out on the ground. Thanks to Japan's Jim Young.
