IC08 Live Scores - Round 4 - First Round Finals - Warrnambool

International Cup 2008

The intention is to update these scores each quarter as the games progress. Match reports and images will follow later. All times are Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), which is +10 GMT. The forecast is for a cool day, around 14 degrees Celsius, but fine after early fog. Partly cloudy with light to moderate southeasterly winds. The overnight low is then supposed to be zero degrees Celsius, so the evening will turn very cold very quickly - no need for ice baths for the players!

Certainly a barn storming last quarter by Nauru, the US would be doubly disappointed now.

The Danes came home with a wet sail against the Brits - - - Did the Danes score early in the last such that did that game get to spend much time with the margin sub 10 points or was there a late goal or 2 with the contest effectively over?

btw - excellent to see the more evenly matched contests giving the Indian, Chinese and Peres lads a chance to experience a more competitive 'contest'.

Congratulations to my boys from Finland on their first win at the IC... absolutely fantastic effort boys.

As the founding father of Finland footy I am very very proud of the improvement that you guys have shown with each game that you play (with limited players and increasing injuries) and ecstatic to see this first win.

Interestingly... (what I have known all along) is that Finland have the greatest forward line in the world...

... with easily the most accurate kickers at goal compared to all of the other countries (the issue is just getting the ball up into the forwards).

As the founding father of footy in China as well... I am happy to see them finally trouble the scorers... and looking forward to their first win on Friday.

Well done lads !!!

Rooster -

how have the injuries been going? how have the Finnish lads gone with respect to fielding a starting 18 each game? Who have been the 'heroes' playing on when otherwise they shouldn't?

I think that Fredi Romar (# 8 for Finland) is definitely one to watch. He was hobbling from the first match, but puts in time and time again.

Gotta confess... I am back in Singapore now, gearing up for Saturday's Asian AFL Championships, so I didn't see the Finns against Sweden nor their match today.

Ville (# 23) impressed me on Friday with a few minor niggling injuries.

A couple of our tallest players have been out since the start (or at least since halfway through round 1) and I reckon that they most likely have put their hands up to play in these last 2 matches...

... it's the toughness that the Finns show called Sissu (correct that if I am wrong guys)...
... the sort of mental toughness that comes from fighting Germany & Russia simultaneously during WWII and still coming out on top !!!

Go Finland !!!

Good to see China and India making a close game of it and of course the Finns and Peace Team cracking it for a win. Good effort for these teams to make a good showing after such a short time playing the game, well done.

To explain, the problem with getting the scores up for the Warrnambool games
has been a lack of reliable wireless broadband internet access. Works fine in the
city, but as anyone who's lived in the country will tell you, can be hit and miss
out of town.

Something we'll improve on if we're all still doing this in 2012!!

I for 1 hope that you are.I have watched footy International grow from when Ross Smith was in charge back in early 90's. I was hoping that an upset would be on the cards with S.A. over N.G. but to all teams well done.

Finland started today's game with 18 men, of which several were not fit for duty at all, including one who had an injured eye from an incident between games - versions vary but a tree branch in the dark has been mentioned. He took to the field in protective shades (first time I've seen that). I'll say more in the match report, but definitely a gutsy effort to hang on, worthy of a Nordic legend or two.
