USFooty Top 10 Countdown: Number 4 New York Magpies

North America

WorldFootyNews.com and USFootyNews.com are teaming up to present the 2008 USFooty Top 10 Poll. To kick things off we are having a Top 10 Countdown for the Preseason Top 10. Who are the best teams in USFooty?

The New York Magpies are Number 4 in the WFN/USFN Top 10 Poll. New York had a solid season in 2007, finishing 6-2 and Number 4 in the World Footy News Top 10 Poll. Their only two losses came against the Baltimore Washington Eagles and the San Diego Lions.

New York has been one of the top teams in Eastern Australian Football League for a number of years but they have not been able to take the next step and beat the top teams from the West – Denver and San Diego. During the EAFL season they had a tough win against the Boston Demons and were upset at home against the Baltimore Washington Eagles. It was enough to be Runner’s Up in the EAFL. At Nationals they were able to put away Golden Gate, but struggled against Chicago and were no match for the San Diego Lions.

In 2008, Head Coach, Rob Oliver’s (pictured) goal will be to rest back the EAFL Premiership from the Eagles while holding off a rejuvenated Boston club. It will be a big ask given that they will be on the road against both clubs. Other than the usual EAFL games against North Carolina and Philadelphia, the Maggies have a heavy schedule hosting the Milwaukee Bombers, the Orange County Bombers and the Boston Demons. As with a number of clubs, the New York Magpies start their season in Florida at the new Broward County Cricket Stadium competing in the Fort Lauderdale Spring Tourny on April 12. The four team New York City Australian Football League begins its six round season in May. The season culminates with the Grand Final on August 9.
