IC 2008 - Hands up for Division 1?

International Cup 2008

With the IC 2008 now less than a year away, 18 international teams are in active discussion with the AFL about taking part, with a further 3 Melbourne-based migrant community teams under consideration.

One of the big changes in the IC 2008 will be the division of the competition into "Premier" and "Developmental" divisions, pitting the more established sides against each other, while giving the newer teams on the block a fairer playing field.

While nothing is yet finalised, discussion between the AFL and international leagues is slowly creating a likely picture of who'll end up in which division.

Assuming an end total of 16 teams, each division will feature two pools of four teams each - allowing 3 pool matches and 2 finals for each side over the course of the competition. This relies on a few factors falling into place, so there's still the possibility of teams being split 10-6 between divisions, and an outside possibility of having to revert to an "all-in" setup if a number of teams pull out.

While readers should note that this list is not in any way final, the current frontrunners for division one are:-

Canada
Denmark
Great Britain
Ireland
Japan
New Zealand
Papua New Guinea
Samoa
South Africa
the USA

The sides most likely to make up division two are:-

China
Finland
India
Israel/Palestine
Nauru
Spain
Sweden
Tonga

Division two may be joined by Somalia, Sudan and Vietnam.

Other developments include plans to allow up to 8 interchange players, as well as no limit on squad size to maximize participation. Eligibility criteria (no Aussies, application process for "third country" players) are to remain unchanged from the previous International Cups.

The biggest surprise on the above list is India, with former Melbourne great and international Aussie Rules journeyman Brian Dixon recently working hard on the subcontinent and very optimistic about the possibility of an Indian side making the trip.

While it will be some months before we know exactly who'll be here (and we'll have a major update in the next few days), the talk is certainly building and we look forward to hearing some debate in the coming months!

Well, I hope they come up with a better name than 'developmental'! :)

Good point. Although the term developmental describes the concept and purpose, presumably (or hopefully) a more appropriate name will be given once things are finalised.

The Sheedy and Barassi Divisions? Or Dixon? Or Premier and Aspirational Divisions? Premier is okay, but the developmental one is tough.

I've hit the thesaurus but it didn't offer much inspiration. Do our readers have any other suggestions? Surely this dilemma is encountered in other sports.

I think the terms they'll end up using will be "division 1" and "division 2",
they've been using "premier" and "developmental" in dicussion but I don't think
that's what they'll call it officially.

Who do you think would be the two teams dropped from the top 10 if they decide on an 8 team division. I think they should do a 10-6 split to avoid the two "dropped" teams dominating the development division.

Regarding divisions names, no, I don't expect it would be called Developmental Division, but something other than Division 2 would be nice - but maybe it's the practical outcome.

Regarding which 2 teams could hypothetically be dropped from Div 1, based on previous results, Japan may be happy to go down, and Samoa will be heavily dependent on which players in Australia can squeeze through on the eligibility rules or get exceptions.

I guess no matter what the split, there will always be a spread of ability, so I don't think organisers should worry too much about 1 or 2 teams dominating a division, it's kind of inevitable anyway. Mind you, the Samoan lads are very physical too, which could be more of a problem for the very newest teams. Without 2 drop downs, you could still see say Nauru dominate, depending on whether they get there and how well the game is currently going on the island.

How about the Premier and Challenger divisions.

Yeah not bad. I was also thinking something like Rising Nations, but it's not catchy.

So there could be a 2008 Australian Football International Cup Premier champion, or maybe Open champion. And a 2008 Australian Football International Cup Challenger champion, or Rising Nations champion.

If I had to nominate, I reckon the two weakest in the "premier" list at the
moment would be Japan and South Africa. They'd probably be at the stronger
end of the development bracket, but I don't reckon they'd be far ahead of
Sweden or Tonga.

That's a big call regarding South Africa.

'Development' division??
Reminds me of about the only decent Geography joke I've heard - (that wasn't relating to my lecturer falling asleep at the projector as his special guest was deliving a slide show to our class).

Little Jenny, whilst talking to the class about her Geography project describes a third world country as 'backward'. Her teacher says "Jenny, that's not a very nice term, wouldn't you prefer to be described as 'under-developed' than 'backward'. To which Jenny replies "Oh no, Backward, sir, definitely backward".

on topic though,
The 'premier' group to be known as 'Melbourne', and the lesser group to be known as 'Geelong'. Means a lot in the 150th anniversary, represents the 2 oldest clubs, and I won't go into any socio-demographic or geo-political symbolic comparisons between Melb and Geel.
