Organisers confirm dates for IC2008

International Cup 2008

The AFL's coordinator of the 2008 Australian Football International Cup has confirmed the dates for the third instalment of world footy's biggest tournament. Roger Berryman told WFN that the dates previously listed as possible have now been settled, with some minor changes. It looks like at least one match (prior to the Grand Final) may be a curtain raiser to an AFL match, but whether the Grand Final will be is subject to the AFL Finals schedule - not known until after Round 22 of the AFL season. Berryman also gave some further insight into the possible attendees and arrangements between those countries and AFL and VAFA clubs (more on that later).

The confirmed dates are:

2008 Australian Football International Cup

Wednesday 27 August Round 1 Melbourne
Friday 29 August Round 2 Melbourne
Friday 29 August Official function, Melbourne
Saturday 30 August Round 2 continued - 1 match as curtain raiser Sat 30 Aug MCG (to be confirmed)
Sunday 31 August Travel to regional Victoria
Monday 1 September Round 3 regional Victoria
Wednesday 3 September Round 4 regional Victoria
Thursday 4 September Travel back to Melbourne
Friday 5 September Finals (*)

* Opportunity for Grand Final to be played as curtain raiser to an AFL final will depend on finals fixture which will not be confirmed until after Round 22 of 2008. Organisers hope for a good outcome but obviously the premiership season runs independently.

The Regional Victoria location is likely to be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.

International players keen to see some live AFL matches will particularly note the round 21 and 22 matches in Melbourne and nearby Geelong, and that the Finals begin the following week (schedule for them unknown until conclusion of round 22). Full draw here.

Friday, Aug 22 - Western Bulldogs vs Essendon Telstra Dome 7:40 pm
Saturday, Aug 23 - Richmond vs Fremantle MCG 2:10 pm, Collingwood vs Sydney Telstra Dome 7:10 pm
Sunday, Aug 24 - Geelong vs Kangaroos Skilled Stadium 1:10 pm, St. Kilda vs Adelaide Telstra Dome 2:10 pm
Saturday, Aug 30 - Kangaroos vs Port Adelaide MCG 1:10 pm, Geelong vs West Coast Skilled Stadium 2:10 pm, Carlton vs Hawthorn Telstra Dome 7:10 pm
Sunday, Aug 31 - Melbourne vs. Richmond MCG 2:10 pm, Essendon vs St. Kilda Telstra Dome 4:40 pm

In terms of which countries are likely to attend, amongst those that could be described as doubtful, Berryman confirmed that India was still a possibility but Germany had ruled itself out as not yet feasible. WFN had previously put Martin Ruppe from the Vienna Kangaroos in Austria in touch with the AFL, but after weighing up the potential costs and squad size necessary, they have decided, like Germany, that 2008 is too soon in their development. With the series going to a four year cycle, fans will be hoping to see them in 2012.

Final deadline for countries entering the 2008 Cup is estimated at being around June '08. Rules and regulations are currently being developed by the committee.

In terms of local ethnic-based sides from Melbourne competing, it now seems they may compete in a separate group altogether, so instead of a main division and a development division with a mix of true international sides and ethnic locals, there could instead effectively be three divisions - premier, developmental and multi-cultural. There would be some irony if the AFL ultimately supported a Multicultural Cup type event, but plenty of followers of international footy would probably encourage them to do so. Possible ethnic local entries being discussed are Vietnam, Sudan and Somalia, with discussions being held with the Victorian Multicultural Commission. If it goes ahead, the multicultural teams may compete in two or three games, rather than the full tournament schedule. More details on VAFA developments later.

Update 18/11/2007: To avoid any confusion on how local ethnic-based sides are proposed to feature in the 2008 International Cup, we note that several days ago event organiser Roger Berryman told WFN that the "Organising Committee is supportive of including such teams separately to the 2 division comp to differentiate between international and multicultural, for example they may only play 2-3 games".

Re: AFL promoting Australian based ethnic teams to participate in the IC cup in Melbourne. I share your irony. As only as recent as early this year we were discouraged to have a harmony cup event in March 08. AFL said they didn't like the way it divided teams into ethnic groups! It is clear that it wasn't wanted because the AFL didn't control it. Another example of AFL hypocrisy. Bringing Australian teams into this event is NOT what was intended when the first International cup was played. It should be limited to international teams participation only.

I agree that we don't want to promote segregation within our society, but I believe these 'ethnic' sides will have to fit a similar criteria to the overseas IC teams. In other words they won't simply be first generation Australians running around against other first generation Australians. If I lived overseas for the next ten years of my life I'd still consider myself Australian, and so arguably a Vietnamese or Sudanese or Greek person that grew up in their home country but now lives in Australia still considers their place of birth as 'their nationality'. Either way its a cloudy issue.

In case it wasn't clear in the story, I should emphasise that I don't think the ethnic-based sides would compete against the truly international sides - they would most likely have their own division. That's my understanding of it anyway.

I would be very interested to find out more about any proposed plans for the Premier and Development divisions in the Cup, whether allocation will be done by AFL, recent results, past placings in the IC, or another method.

I'd like to think that teams would be given the choice to allocate themselves to a bracket, based on their own expectations and experience. If the system is implemented, the organisers may be forced to allocate teams against their wishes to have a workable spread across both brackets.

The AFL asked leagues which they'd prefer, and conveniently it split almost
exactly 50/50 with who wanted to be in which division. This was a few months
ago, I assume that's still the planning they're working on.

This of course depends on everyone making it down, though if the regulars can
make it, plus at least a few from Tonga, Finland, Sweden, China and/or India,
Israel/Palestine, I reckon they'll get 16 at least.

The more I think about this, the more I think the idea to allow Australian based teams should be scrapped.

It could be considered unfair that a team from overseas, having in many cases invested a large amount of money and effort into getting a large squad to Australia, play against teams who are locally based, have well funded programs and development officers courtesy of the Australian Goverment (and tax payers) and receive regular access to footy resources. Perhaps if the AFL supported growth and funded countries to a more substantial degree over the long term then the playing field would be a little bit more level.

Their inclusion and the potential perception by the Australian public could dilute the spectacle as a whole and one wonders if their inclusion goes at odds to the noble "intentions" of the IC as they were established by the IAFC and AFL back in 2002 and confirmed in 2005.

If these Australian based teams desire competition, then I believe the 2008 Harmony Cup could be the more appropriate and fairer alternative.

Do you have information to suggest the international sides would be playing against the Australian-based sides?

You refer to "well funded programs and development officers courtesy of the Australian Goverment (and tax payers) and receive regular access to footy resources". I just wanted to clarify which teams are you referring to?

Thought it is still a few months to go, I think the IC will struggle to attract 16 countries and the Australian based teams MAY be added to the "developing pool" so there is adequate competition for the lower teir nations.

"Well funded with full time officers" refers to the AFLs current corp of full time Multicultural DO's who I assume will be involved with these Australian based sides. I also understand the positions are heavily funded by the governments multicultural and integration initiatives. They were so in 2005 but however I am willing to concede that the situation may have changed.

It would be great to see the AFL take a leadership role and reciprocate these positions overseas with full time development staff. Though I have a hunch we may another decade to go before we see this in earnest.

From our first discussion with the AFL, I got the impression that the ethnic sides would compete in the developmental division, but from more recent discussion, I gather the plan is they'll play some "friendlies" outside the points table, but against international teams.

Having said that, I think we have to wait and see how many teams there are. Either way, there are only 3 Melbourne-based community teams currently in discussions with the AFL (Sudan, Somalia and Vietnam) and I doubt they'd just play against each other.

If the Harmony Cup makes a comeback next year, I expect you would see the Vietnamese team take part in both, as might the African sides.

While I definitely wouldn't support an Italian side with Alessio, SOS etc playing in the IC, I'll reserve judgment on the all-amateur Melbourne-based teams until I know more details.

The Rugby League WC got an absolute pasting in the media for allowing a lot of Australians with very distant connections to play for other countries, but the flipside was that some such as the "Lebanese national rugby league team", started out as all Australian-based at the RLWC, but acted as a catalyst for RL in Lebanon - and from what I've heard, ditto to a lesser etxtent for Italy, Greece and Malta.

For any that may have missed it, see the update at the end of the article. I think that makes the intention clear. Whether that changes will be up to the AFL and the attending countries.
