Asian footy action for July/August '05

AsiaSome interesting results in July / August in the Asian region, which only adds to the excitement of the upcoming Asian Championships. Hong Kong proved their current title holder status by thumping Thailand in the Land of Smiles. Malaysia continued their solid run into September with a good win over Jakarta, and Bali further added to Jakarta’s woes a month later by crushing them in Jakarta.

WARRIORS GET UP OVER THE BINTANGS

The Malaysian Warriors continued their fine run to the Asian Champs by beating the Jakarta Bintangs on their home soil. The feeling in the Warrior’s camp is that this will be their year, so they may surprise a few people in Manila.

Final Scores:

Malaysian Warriors 8 - 11 - 59
Jakarta Bintangs 7 - 7 - 49

Warriors Best Players: Roger Sefton, Paul McCalman, Greg Speechley, Jason Winter
Warriors Goals: Jason Flanagan 2, Roger Sefton 2, Michael Sweeting 1, Phil Lee 1, Greg Speechley 1, Jason Winter 1

Special mention to Micky Sweeting as the first player over 50 in Asian footy to kick a goal in a competitive game (or so Farm says)

DRAGONS THUMP THAIGERS IN LAND OF SMILES

The Hong Kong Dragons completely demolished a dispirited and unorganised Tiger outfit to the tune of 51 points. The game was all over as a contest at quarter time with the Dragons running rampant and not giving the Tigers any opportunity to gain possession. The second half was a very even contest with the Tigers outscoring the Dragons but the damage had been done and the Dragons came away with a strong win.

Final Score:

Dragons 11 – 9 - 75
Tigers 3 – 6 - 24

Tiger Goal Kickers: Sutherland, Everitt and Will 1 each.
Tiger Best Players: McIntyre, Sutherland, Bedford, Will.

GECKOS TRIUMPH

The Bali Geckos celebrated a big win over their old foes the Jakarta Bintangs in Jakarta. A squad of 20 Geckos ventured to the Big Durian, with arguably the strongest Bali team ever and completely outclassed the Bintangs all over the ground. For Bali we saw positive signs of what they can do in Manila next month and for the Bintangs much work needs to be done over the next few weeks.

Final score:

Bali Geckos 20 – 14 - 134
Jakarta Bintangs 7 – 6 - 48

Geckos Best Players: Steve Jeisman, Terry Russell, Russell Yule, Matt Scarff, Courtney Werleman, in a great team effort.
