The prospect of an AFL match being played in the United States has been tantalising Australian Rules footy fans and players in the US for several years. After several disappointments the signs have been promising this year. Although it has yet to be officially confirmed, it now looks like the match is more likely than ever before.
The Sydney Swans official website features a copy of a letter from senior coach Paul Roos inviting Sydney fans and sponsors to join them in travelling to the US. He says the match will take place at the University of California, LA on Sunday 15th January. It details extensive plans such as a Swans golf day, dinner with Australian celebrities, access to major Los Angeles attractions, and the opportunity for companies to make business contacts. The match would be part of the Australian Week promotion held annually in LA.
There is no doubt that if done well, this will be a tremendous opportunity to promote the game in North America. Hopefully, if it goes ahead, the US national side will play as a curtain raiser. The full article is here. Thanks to AFANA for the information.
