PNG wins Queensland U16 Country Championship

OceaniaAFL-Papua New Guinea put on an encouraging display of Australian football to win the 2005 Queensland U16 Country Championships over Cairns AFL by 7 points.

The championship, held over the ANZAC day long weekend, featured eight representative sides from some of Queensland's fastest developing regions. In addition to grand finalists PNG and Cairns, teams from the Capricornia, Townsville, Darling Downs, Bundaberg Wide Bay, Mackay and Far North Queensland leagues competed in a series of round robin matches before selectors for the state U15 and U16 teams.

A very encouraging sign of the strength of the code in Queensland was the relative evenness of results over the weekend, with no 100-point blowouts posted against the newly-established leagues. The strong performance by PNG in the Country Championships is indicative of the benefits they are already reaping through a development partnership with AFL Queensland. No doubt after such a strong showing in the Country Championships, several of the PNG boys will be knocking on the door for selection in state representative sides, which are the next steps towards being drafted by an AFL club.

It's hard to know exactly how good the standard in Qld country is these days, but you would have to think this is huge news for PNG. Will the PNG guys be eligible to play for Qld in the state carnivals this year? It really is a huge step forward and I imagine will draw plenty of interest from savvy AFL clubs. Well done to those running PNG footy and Qld footy. Congratulations to the players of PNG.

Yes, they are eligible. Especially now since PNG fall under the AFLQ banner. It is true that the strength of the country Queensland regions is still low relative to many other parts of Australia, but it's all very positive. Some PNG boys have been picked to represent country Qld in the past year or so. But AFL PNG also has to balance the schooling needs of the kids picked - they can't stay in Australia for too long. But certainly the talent pathways should ensure top PNG footy kids getting noticed by AFL scouts. The next 4 years should see an exciting rise of PNG boys through the AFLQ system. Obviously their proximity to Qld is an advantage. Hopefully something similar can happen with New Zealand too, say with NSW-ACT.
