All-Australian amateurs for Ireland?

General NewsThere has been a report that an All-Australian amateur football side may tour Ireland later this year.

Details are sketchy, but a report in the Messenger newspaper chain featured an article on a South Australian player who was selected in an All-Australian amateur side after a recent match. The side includes six other South Australians, and was selected after SA played Victoria. This of course would not be a true All-Australian side, as there would be many worthy players from states other than SA and Victoria.

The article was in the East Torrens Messenger for 4th August. It is a paper that has different versions delivered to different council regions of Adelaide, South Australia. All-Australian sides are normally picked to recognise the best players, but they do not get the opportunity to play anyone. It was reported that there is a chance the team will travel to play Irish sides as a curtain raiser to the International Rules matches played between Australia (AFL players) and Ireland (GAA players). This year's matches are scheduled for October. It wasn't clear whether the Australian amateurs would play Irish Australian Rules clubs, or perhaps International Rules against other Irish teams.

World Footy News stresses that the above article is based on one article in a newspaper, and that article only said that it was possible. Hopefully the tour will go ahead and give Aussie Rules a kick along in Ireland. If anyone has any further information please contact us at WFN (click on the author's profile and send an email).
